A Mentoring Programme to Develop

British Asian Playback Singers

The British Asian Playback Singers Mentoring Programme is a creative development initiative designed to identify, mentor, and support emerging vocal talent within the British Asian community in the UK.

For many years, I have felt there was a real gap between raw talent and meaningful opportunity. There is no shortage of gifted singers within our communities, but there are very few structured pathways to help them develop into confident, professional artists with the right guidance, recording experience, and industry exposure.

This programme has been created to help bridge that gap.

Its aim is simple: to discover promising singers, develop their skills, and create original musical work that gives them a genuine platform to grow.

Why This Programme Matters

Playback singing has always held a special place in South Asian music and film culture. Yet in Britain, many talented singers of South Asian background remain unseen, unsupported, or disconnected from the professional networks that could help them move forward.

The British Asian Playback Singers Mentoring Programme exists to change that.

This initiative is about more than recording songs. It is about:

  • nurturing talent
  • building confidence
  • developing professional skills
  • creating access to the creative industries
  • strengthening representation within British Asian music and screen culture

It is also about creating connections between singers, producers, filmmakers, and live event organisers so that talent is not left isolated.

What the Programme Offers

Participants may benefit from:

  • original lyrics and compositions
  • song development and music production
  • professional studio recording experience
  • guidance in playback singing techniques and performance skills
  • experience of working directly with a music director
  • introductions and networking opportunities with British Asian filmmakers
  • online and social media exposure
  • introductions to live show organisers, with the possibility of performance opportunities

The programme is designed to combine creative development with practical exposure, so that participants gain both artistic growth and a better understanding of the professional world.

Who It Is For

This programme is intended for:

  • aspiring British Asian playback singers
  • vocalists with potential who may not yet have access to industry networks
  • singers looking to develop their craft in a more structured and professional environment
  • emerging artists interested in music connected to film, media, and performance

Applicants do not need to be fully established artists. What matters most is potential, commitment, and willingness to grow.

How It Works

The programme will identify promising singers through submissions, recommendations and Auditions.

Selected participants may then be invited into a mentoring and development process that could include:

  • initial talent review
  • creative discussion and artistic assessment
  • vocal and stylistic development
  • recording sessions
  • production of selected songs
  • introductions to relevant creative contacts and opportunities

As the programme develops, its exact structure may expand depending on available support, partnerships, and funding.

Aims and Wider Impact

The wider purpose of the programme is to support cultural expression, talent development, and access to the arts within the British Asian community.

It aims to:

  • develop underrepresented vocal talent in the UK
  • create stronger links between music and film communities
  • encourage new original work rooted in British Asian identity and experience
  • provide skills, confidence, and visibility to emerging singers
  • contribute to a more inclusive and representative creative landscape

This is both a talent development project and a cultural investment.

For Supporters, Funders and Partners

The British Asian Playback Singers Mentoring Programme has the potential to make a meaningful contribution to creative opportunity, cultural representation, and community development.

By supporting this initiative, funders and partners would be helping to create:

  • access to mentorship and professional development
  • original cultural output
  • pathways for emerging talent
  • stronger representation of British Asian voices in music and media
  • a more connected ecosystem between artists, producers, and filmmakers

The programme is particularly relevant to organisations interested in:

  • arts and culture
  • inclusion and representation
  • creative education
  • community development
  • support for underrepresented talent

Support may help expand access, improve delivery, and increase the number of artists who can benefit.
